Extreme taper this week, but that didn't stop me from injuring my left IT band (runs along the side of your leg from your hip to knee). So frustrating as I had had such good 18 and 20 mile training runs. The rest of the week I rested my leg, iced it, stretched it, and even had my physical therapist try to work some magic on it.
Race day was hot and humid (completely unlike typical San Diego weather!). We met at 345am and the gun went off at 615am. I had no idea how my leg would react. The first half, both legs felt heavy, but not painful and I was able to keep up with the women I usually run with. I passed C at mile 12 and kept on going but by that point my legs (both of them) went from heavy/tired to flat out painful.
I listened to my legs for the rest of the race; not completely following my intervals if the pain was too bad. The goal was to finish the race -- which I did successfully! :) (For a recap of the negatives of the race, you can read this article. I agree with most of what he says, except for the part about the Team in Training runners.)
Today I'm hobbling but I can still walk. I'll take it easy for the next few weeks, get my IT bands back in shape, and then find a nice 5k to do!
